logo.pngI had the opportunity last night to attend the Embrace documentary, a social impact documentary that explores the issue of body image. It’s an easy watch, has a great message and is empowering as you think more about it.
If you get a chance to go, I’d recommend it. It plays worldwide and you can even help bring it to your city, much like my friend that took the steps to get it to Fargo.
Here are the key messages in the film.

We say no to…

  • Society and advertisers preying on women’s insecurities
  • Excessive Photoshopping of body images in the media
  • Being programmed into accepting unrealistic body images
  • The notion that being a certain weight determines whether you’re healthy
  • Women being treated as sexual objects and the objectification of women

And we say yes to…

  • Body diversity and reveling in the beauty of the human form
  • Celebrating the journey our bodies have been on
  • Growing old, and acknowledging the privilege to do so
  • Focusing on things that are important, rather than comparing ourselves to others
  • Being healthy at every weight

As I drove home, and even as a I reread these key messages, I challenged myself to think about if my work with Ruby Ribbon means I’m living these messages. I think it does. Ruby Ribbon is all about celebrating confidence, and this is a key message of the film — love your body no matter how it looks. Ruby Ribbon also helps you find the clothes that look best on your body without sacrificing comfort. I love it when I see a new customer light up when she sees how her body looks in a cami or a new flattering item.
